No high tech whizzing or grinder sounds, just the porcelain textures gently crushing the dried herbs. If you want to use this with garlic or onion, you could, as opposed to a marble one to avoid retaining odors. This little mortar and pestle are so affordable you can get a couple to always have a clean one. You can throw this in the dishwasher if you like. Or if you prefer hand washing or use while camping, just put it in some hot water once you’re done and it’s fresh for the next use. I used sage as an example here, and the leaves are quickly pulverized with little effort. (Pardon my weathered gardening hands!) This is a cool tool if you’re teaching young ones to cook, because there is no large appliance or choppers to worry about. This isn’t too heavy like marble would be. The pieces are slightly imperfect and definitely have a handmade look, but it in no way affects their use. As they are porcelain, I think they could break if you dropped them on a stone or ceramic tile floor, so keep that in mind. I mention this because I drop stuff often, but I have vinyl floors.
